Vertical axis wind turbines

After having studied and develop different types of vertical axis wind turbine both Savonius and Darrieus and Hybrid, in collaboration with I-LABS, we are developing an innovative  variable geometry vertical axis wind turbine. This turbine is able to modify its geometry according to the wind so to maximize its performance in different conditions. The innovation regards the rotor geometry, the materials and the electronics controls able to transform in real time the turbine.
Numerical analyses are used to study and optimize the company products. Fluid-dynamic optimization is obtained by means of CFD transient analyses that let to analyze the aerodynamic behavior of many different geometries. Mechanical optimization is then realized by means of FEM analyses so that overall and local  stress can be analyzed.
Creation of prototypes and realization of tests is made to verify numerical data and observe the real behavior of the implemented solutions. Tests are conducted in a wind tunnel to improve the aerodynamic  performance while to experiment the real stress in the most stressed point  are used the strain gauges.

New materials are used to improve the mechanical performance of the rotor  to obtain lightness and strength. Composite materials are used, overall carbon fiber and fiberglass, within high strength metals. New natural composites are studied to create low environmental impact products.
